On the morning of January 7th, a fire broke out near the ritzy and glamorous neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, just 20 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. The fire quickly became a monstrous disaster. According to CalFire, 23,713 acres had burned to a crisp, with only 22% containment as of January 16th. Another similar fire, the Eaton Fire, started on the same day as the Palisades Fire. Calfire currently reports a 55% containment for the Eaton Fire. both these fires have raged on, threatening the safety of thousands and burning a combined 35,000 acres, destroying 12,000 structures in the process, another threat was at work in the midst of the vulnerable moment.
While neighborhood residents were evacuating, reports emerged of looters who that as an opportunity to break
into their homes and steal valuables for their gain.
Throughout the havoc that occurred, more than 40 people have been captured as suspects in alleged robberies around the area of Pacific Palisades. Many of these looters were found with weapons to break into the neighboring houses of Pacific Palisades, as The New York Post states, “They also had numerous suspicious items including a handsaw, electronic car key fobs, and programmers for the fobs, cops said. Each was charged with felony conspiracy to commit vehicle theft.”
Some of the neighboring areas around Mandeville Canyon captured these break-ins from their ring cameras taking place and as much as $200,000 worth of valuables were stolen since the fire started.
In the days following the height of the fires, there have been reports that criminals had also gotten the idea of starting their fires around the rich areas so the people would evacuate and later on, loot the area as The LA Times recalls, “Sierra was arrested after residents saw him “attempting to start a fire” in a West Hills neighborhood Thursday afternoon, according to a law enforcement document obtained by The Times.” Others have taken another approach of posing as firefighters so they would be allowed in the area without question.
These acts of burglary have been a real threat to neighborhoods, and the fact that people were still preying on other’s sufferings is crazy and truly evil. Authorities had to battle these criminals and they posed a danger to the safety of others too.
