People often think that cheer is not a sport, but instead, think that it is just a random team that likes to perform for

fun. But they are wrong (well at least the first part). Cheer is like any other sport: long hours of practice, skill, physical exertion, and dedication to the team. The Neuwirth cheerleading team has been around for 6 years. They used to do competitions but once COVID-19 hit everything came to a pause. After coming back from the pandemic the cheer team reunited together but there wasn’t any competition until last year when a new coach joined the Neuwirth team. Her name is Melony Morales, and she has been working hard with the cheer team to go to competitions. Melony Morales is also a cheerleader, and as the cheer captain at Long Beach College, she brought extreme skills to the Neuwirth cheer team.

We interviewed Melony Morales, the cheer coach here in Neuwirth.

Neuwirth Times (NT) When you came to coach the team what was your first thought about the team?

Morales My first thought was expecting the team not to have high experience because all of the people don’t have the same experience as the others. Also, I had to teach you guys to forget all the wrong skills and teach you the right skills. We had a lot of people come and go.

NT Do you believe the team has improved throughout your time at Neuwirth?

Morales Yes, the cheer team has improved a lot, even with the boys that joined the team this year to help us with crazy stunts for competitions, shout out to those boys. Also, I was surprised that the team began to expand this year. A lot of people tried out and were interested in joining the team. Once in a while, the team has its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, we still go strong.

Melony Morales loves her team;  she supports them in anything and everything, even their education.

We also interviewed Daisy Alvarado, one of the formal cheer captains who has been in cheer since 9th grade. She has wonderful leadership skills and helps and supports her teammates in any way.

NT So Daisy, throughout these three years, do you believe that the cheer team has improved?

Daisy Throughout my three yearsI truly believe that the team has improved physically and mentally. When I first started in 9th grade the team wasn’t as united. Each person had their little group and was isolated from interaction with new people and for the stunts we stuck with the basics which were halves, and at times, extensions. Now there is a safe and interacting environment with everyone advancing tremendously in stunts as we go beyond the basics.”

NT Second question, What are the challenges of learning these new skills?

Daisy When discussing the challenges we faced with these new skills there are plenty. For example, the stunts that we learned are intense, and at times there are injuries that lead to fear and mental blocks that get in the way of performing at our best ability.

Daisy shows a lot of dedication towards the team and loves working with her teammates to have a special bond.

Lastly, we interviewed Edwin Mejia, one of the boys from cheer who joined this year, and helps the cheer team a lot throughout practice. He's a loving and caring person towards his teammates and helps out in many ways.

NT So Edwin How do you feel about joining the cheer team?

Edwin At first, it was difficult to undergo because I wasn’t accustomed to it, but over time I was able to expand my knowledge of my mental health which made me cheer.

NT Second question, What got you into cheer?

Edwin The reason I joined cheer was because I didn’t have any AP Classes, which made me unfilled and I felt my community lied to me.

NT Lastly, What are some fun facts about cheer?

Edwin It is really competitive, you need to be committed when cheering, you get injured every second.

Overall the cheer team has improved a lot. They have been working hard in every practice working on the routine for competitions. The cheer team has four competitions this school year and their skills have improved a lot. If you want to see the cheer team in action and support them, come and support them in their competitions and see their wonderful skills in the form of stunts and dance routines.
