Since the start of January, there has been a significant protest ongoing in Bakersfield, CA. Many individuals have gathered to voice their disapproval of the current immigration policies and enforcement actions. The protest has drawn attention to the activities of immigration as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has led these operations to the detention and deportation of many undocumented immigrants, sparking outrage among community members.
ICE is an organization that is always at work, but with Trump’s promises to close the border to Mexico as he takes office, the threat of raids and deportations by ICE has grown. The Hispanic population - or “people who are brown” (Protests Spread Throughout Central Valley) - is the specific community that the border patrol in Bakersfield has targeted. Moreover, they are focused on the working class, which in this case are the field workers.
In response, there has been a diverse group of people like immigrant rights advocates that have drawn their attention to this issue, working tirelessly to spread awareness and support to protect the rights of those who are being discriminated against. Numerous protesters are calling for an end to what they describe as inhumane treatment, arguing that ICE’s actions are tearing families apart.
Influencers and celebrities of the Hispanic community on the internet, such as Itati Lopez, have come out and used their platforms to spread awareness about the current situation. Including trying to warn their fan bases and other individuals to stay safe, and letting them know what they can do if they come in contact with border patrol agents. More of the support of these influencers can be seen on (Influencers Bakersfield Border Patrol), where they are involved in the protest, giving back, and showing up for the people who aren’t able to.
As of now, Bakersfield is not the closest place being targeted, but we must be alert that ICE is in Los Angeles and they might target LA in greater numbers soon.
Under these unsettling circumstances, it’s important to remember your rights. Individuals can refuse to answer questions given by agents, refuse to open the door if agents show up at their doorstep, and choose to remain silent until a lawyer is present. Border control cannot enter a home or into private land anywhere without a warrant or consent of the owner.
